Is it the Gore or Action of Warhammer 40K Dawn of War II?
I’m not sure which keeps me coming back, the gore or all the great action in Dawn of War II. Which is it for you?
There is certainly much more tactical planning and strategies going on in this version. The special affects and RTS controls make for in-your-face action packed play. The biggest change that has really added to the intensity is the costant battles. You spend alot less time with planning and upgrading troops. There is plenty of planning but it is somewhat removed from the battles and done on your battleship anchored in space safely away from the struggles on the planet surface. When on the planet it is pretty much all out war. Keeping track of the life health of your team is the main focus.
It is not to say that there aren’t some drawbacks to the game. First is the duration, which can last up to 20 hours per campaign. There are assaults – fighting across the map/field to the opposite side where you spend significant energy defending power generators from mass attacks. These 15 minute or so missions are all somewhat the same, making for some monotony.
Secondly there are very few map choices on each planet. If you play for long periods you will begin saying “Sheesh – I’m here again?” There’s a bit of deviation but sometimes not enough.
Lastly, the story isn’t anything all that new. The big bad hordes you have to kill.
All in all it’s a fun game, with some breaks from it periodically, perhaps for a little shot in the arm of some World of Warcraft Lich King action.
The art and visual effects are stunning along with the animations for such things as the killing blows – adds the gore I’ve come to expect and adds the touch of realism I look for.
You can get more variety if you play the multi player version and most of the game plays the same. You are holding your own strategic bases or areas instead of destroying and taking the enemy strongholds. Single play is good for getting down the basics and enjoying watching the giant Dreadnought of Eldar Wraith Lord rip someone to shreds, but multi play ads the variety.
I’d give the single play version:

3 Controllers Out of 5
And the multi-player version:

4 Controlers Out of 5
